Caitlin Clark will be out for at least two weeks of the WNBA season while she deals with a left quadriceps strain. Her absence from the lineup proves Angel Reese very wrong.
Ticket prices for the Indiana Fever’s next few games have plummeted in just the short time since the announcement, including their upcoming matchup against the Chicago Sky.
Reese, who was drafted into the WNBA six picks behind Clark, went on an unprompted rant about the increased popularity of the league around this time last year. She (in)famously made it all about herself with the bold claim that people are watching women’s basketball because of her too and not just the eventual Rookie of the Year.
To be completely fair, what she said is entirely true. There are people out there who are watching the WNBA for players other than Caitlin Clark. Angel Reese is one of those players. However, it is impossible to discredit the direct correlation between the rise of the league and the arrival of the greatest scorer in college basketball history. It goes hand in hand. Let’s be real.
This latest injury serves as the perfect example.
Ticket prices for last season’s final regular season game between the Sky and the Fever sold for record numbers. It was the most expensive game in WNBA history with the get-in price hovering around $165.
Although tickets were much cheaper for the first meeting between Chicago and Indiana to begin the 2025 regular season earlier this month, the get-in price was still greater than $75. Not anymore!
Caitlin Clark is out until at least June 8, which means that she will not play against Angel Reese at the United Center on June 7 as part of the Commissioners Cup. As of Monday morning, the cheapest ticket on the secondary market cost approximately $65 (plus fees and such). When I started to write this article, just one hour after the injury was announced, the cheapest ticket had already dropped to $55. As of this current moment, while I write these words, the cheapest ticket is listed at $50.
That trend is also true for the Indiana Fever’s three upcoming games against the Mystics and the Suns. Tickets were already pretty cheap because of the opponent. Prices dropped even further after the news about Clark. People are less inclined to attend the game when she is not on the floor.
Just to compare, June 10th would be the first game back for Clark if all things go according to plan. To see the Indiana Fever play the Dream in Atlanta on that date will cost $173.
Angel Reese wants to badly to be as big of a draw as Caitlin Clark. She’s not. The quadriceps strain and subsequent price drop proves her wrong.
