Chiefs Make Blockbuster Trade With Rams Ahead of Free Agency

Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach has once again made a blockbuster trade.

With only one year remaining on his rookie contract, cornerback Trent McDuffie has been at the center of trade rumors over the last couple of months.

On Wednesday the Chiefs decided to pull the trigger, dealing McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams. Here are the full terms of the trade, per NFL insider Adam Schefter:

Kansas City Chiefs Get Impressive Return for CB Trent McDuffie
Four draft picks for one player is quite the haul for the Chiefs. For comparison, they traded cornerback L’Jarius Sneed and a seventh-round pick to the Tennessee Titans in 2024 for just a third-round pick. Back in 2018 Kansas City traded cornerback Marcus Peters and a sixth-round pick to the Rams for a 2018 fourth-round pick and a 2019 second-round pick.

The Chiefs now have two picks in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft. They have their original pick at No. 9 overall, and have taken the No. 29 overall pick from Los Angeles. Kansas City also now has two selections in the fifth round, and could have another one coming in the form of a compensatory pick for defensive lineman Tershawn Wharton.

With so many holes to fill throughout their roster, the Chiefs badly needed more draft capitol. Now they can be a little more flexible drafting the best players available rather than for need. The last time they had two first-round draft picks was in 2022 when they selected McDuffie and defensive end George Karlaftis.

McDuffie will leave behind a great legacy with the Chiefs despite playing for them for just four years. He was a key part of Kansas City winning back-to-back Super Bowls in 2022 and 2023. His pass breakup against San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy on a crucial third-down play late in Super Bowl LVIII helped propel the Chiefs to victory.

Examining the Rest of the Chiefs’ CB Room

Kansas City certainly has some rebuilding to do in its CBs corps. Not only is McDuffie gone, but Jaylen Watson is set to become a free agent next week. The Chiefs could attempt to bring Watson back, but he will have a competitive and high-priced market. Current CBs that Kansas City has under contract are Nohl Williams, Kristian Fulton, Kevin Knowles, Melvin Smith Jr., and Chris Roland-Wallace.

Williams flashed several times as a rookie last season, but had limited playing time. Fulton’s 2025 season was injury riddled dating all the way back to training camp. He was a healthy scratch for much of the season, but finally received significant playing time when McDuffie was placed on injured reserve with a knee injury. Fulton made the most of his opportunity, playing well during the final few games of the year.

It’s not out of the question that Williams and Fulton are the top two CBs for the Chiefs in 2026. They could use one of their high draft picks on a CB to add some quality depth. Knowles showed some promise as a rookie last season, and Roland-Wallace could be a candidate to play in the nickel CB spot.
