Andy Reid Fires Coach In Attempt to Rebuild Staff After Receiving HC Requests For Chiefs’ Coordinators

For a team defined by offensive firepower, the Kansas City Chiefs’ biggest headache in 2025 was a wide receiver room that couldn’t catch the ball. Now, as other teams look to poach his coordinators, Andy Reid has decided the first change must come from within. He already has one name struck off, as reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

“The #Chiefs are moving on from WRs coach Connor Embree, source said. There may be other changes to Andy Reid’s staff, but this talented group will have a new coach in 2026,” insider Ian Rapoport reported.

The wide receiver corps struggled mightily this season. While Hollywood Brown led the group with 587 yards, he has only had a 54 percent catch rate. Behind him was Rashee Rice, who also had a 53 percent receiving rate this season. But the worst problem had been the group dropping the ball. The Chiefs had turnovers due to receivers dropping passes, which led to interceptions or failed fourth-down attempts.

Just take their Week 14 game against the Houston Texans, for example. They dropped the ball a total of six times, the highest in quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ era. Still, during the season, Reid only showed a positive outlook and supported his players. However, as the team wrapped up its season, Reid announced that changes were coming to Kansas City.Có thể là hình ảnh về ‎văn bản cho biết '‎VIA @IMAGO KS اسي ? “I’ll be even more motivated to get this offseason started, just the way this season ended,” the head coach said after the Week 18 loss. “[I’ve] been here 10 years. [It’s the] first time being in this position, so [there’s] definitely a lot of motivation coming on my end.”

Connor Embree joined the Kansas City Chiefs coaching staff in 2019 as a defensive assistant. He later moved to the offensive side and became an offensive quality control coach in 2021 and 2022 before being named the wide receivers coach in March 2023.

During his first season as the WRs coach, Rashee Rice led the team with 79 catches for 938 yards and seven TDs, setting franchise rookie records in receptions and receiving touchdowns. Xavier Worthy also continued as a key target in 2024, registering 59 catches for 638 yards and six TDs, while DeAndre Hopkins added 41 catches for 437 yards and four TDs after joining midseason. However, the mishaps in the WR group have been a talking point for some time now.

The update comes at a time when the Tennessee Titans are reaching out to candidates as they continue their head coaching search. Two members of the Kansas City Chiefs’ staff became a part of that process.

Multiple coach-needy teams circle Reid’s coaching staff
In the Reid-Mahomes era, KC has certainly turned into a dynasty. Before this season, the team continuously ranked among the top tiers. However, seeing that they lost their Super Bowl LIX last season for a threepeat and have been out of the playoff picture, it was apparent that changes will soon follow in Kansas City. This downturn has put other NFL teams on high alert for the chance to poach talented coordinators from a staff that is likely facing a shake-up.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Titans formally requested interviews on Monday with Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy and defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. Along with them, they also reached out to Broncos DC Vance Joseph and Colts DC Lou Anarumo.

Nagy had already been viewed as a possible interview target, and the official request made things public. If both Nagy and Spagnuolo were to leave during the same hiring cycle, it would create challenges for Kansas City. However, outside interest in the OC has been increasing by the day.

Three potential teams could approach Chiefs’ OC Matt Nagy
Several NFL teams have lined up interviews with Matt Nagy as they search for a new head coach. Reports say three franchises plan to meet with the Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive coordinator later this week. The list of teams that the offensive coordinator is scheduled to speak to includes the Tennessee Titans, Las Vegas Raiders, and Arizona Cardinals.

The Titans and Raiders are expected to interview Nagy on Thursday, followed by the Cardinals on Friday. Tennessee’s hiring process is being led by general manager Mike Borgonzi, who also has experience working in Kansas City’s front office. That prior connection could also add a layer of influence on the team’s interest.

Nagy has spent most of his NFL coaching career working under Andy Reid with the Kansas City Chiefs. He briefly left that role to serve as head coach of the Chicago Bears, where he was named AP NFL Coach of the Year in 2018. His contract with Kansas City expired after the season, making him available.

The decision not to retain Matt Nagy as offensive coordinator in 2026 mainly emerged due to contract and career factors. Nagy’s contract with the Kansas City Chiefs expired at the end of the 2025 season, and no extension has been finalized. With Embree out and Nagy likely departing, and other coordinators drawing interest, Andy Reid faces the significant challenge of rebuilding his coaching staff to fix an offense that sputtered throughout 2025.
