BREAKING: Fired Coach Returns to the Warriors as Steve Kerr’s Assistant after HC Stint… – News

From Hero to Jobless: Should the Warriors Rescue Mike Brown to Revive Their Dynasty?

Is it time for Golden State to bring Mike Brown back into the fold? Sacramento clearly didn’t appreciate what they had.

The former Golden State Warriors assistant coach was instrumental in transforming the Sacramento Kings from a perennial bottom-dweller into a legitimate playoff contender when he took the reins in 2022. His success brought hope to a long-suffering franchise. Yet, in one of the sharpest hero-to-fired transitions in recent memory, Brown is now without a head coaching job.

This turn of events is another chapter in Brown’s rollercoaster coaching career. Despite an impressive résumé—including an NBA Coach of the Year award in 2009 and multiple playoff appearances—his career has often been derailed by bad timing and unfortunate circumstances.

Brown’s first head coaching gig with the Cleveland Cavaliers showcased his ability to succeed under pressure. He led the LeBron James-led Cavs to the 2007 NBA Finals, though the roster lacked star power beyond its generational superstar. When LeBron left Cleveland, Brown was promptly fired—an undeserved scapegoat.

Next, he joined the Los Angeles Lakers, inheriting a lineup of Kobe Bryant, Dwight Howard, and Steve Nash. What should have been a dream team quickly unraveled due to injuries and poor chemistry. Brown lasted just five games into his second season before being shown the door.

Even his return to Cleveland in 2013 ended prematurely during a rebuild. However, his time as an assistant with Golden State revitalized his career. Working under Steve Kerr, Brown helped guide the Warriors to multiple championships, proving his tactical brilliance and leadership during Kerr’s absences.

When Sacramento came calling, it seemed Brown finally had the perfect opportunity. He led the Kings to their first playoff appearance in 17 years, pushing the Warriors to seven games in a thrilling first-round series. The Kings even eliminated Golden State from last year’s play-in tournament—a testament to Brown’s coaching acumen.

Now, with Golden State struggling to reclaim its former glory, could bringing Mike Brown back be the key to reigniting the Warriors’ playoff hopes?
