Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is working hard this offseason to recover from an ACL and MCL tear suffered in Week 15.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid told reporters recently that Mahomes spends “seven hours a day” at the team’s training center. “He’s in there cranking away, making progress every day.”
The 30-year-old quarterback is also keeping an eye on the Kansas City Current after the NWSL team underwent major changes this offseason. The three-time Super Bowl MVP and his wife, Brittany Mahomes, are co-owners of the Current, along with owners Chris and Angie Long.
Despite being the fourth-smallest market team, they’ve become the second-most valuable franchise in the NWSL.

Last season, the Current scored the most points (65), recorded the most wins (21), most shutouts (16), multi-goal wins (15), and more. While they were considered the runaway favorite to win the NWSL championship, they lost to Gotham FC (No. 8) in the quarterfinals.
After their postseason heartbreak, they hired a new head coach, Chris Armas. KC pulled the trigger on a blockbuster move to send Claire Hutton to Bay FC for $1.1 million and replaced her by acquiring midfielder Croix Bethune from the Washington Spirit. The Spirit received a club-record $100,000 in allocation funds and $900,000 in transfer threshold funds.

The KC Current Pull Off a Comeback Win Over the Utah Royals
In front of a rowdy crowd draped in teal at CPKC Stadium on March 14, the Current came back from a 1-0 deficit to defeat the Utah Royals FC 2-1. The team’s newest stars played a huge role in their victory. Bethune, in her KC debut, scored the equalizer in the 57th minute.
While Hocking nearly scored the game-winner, that goal was made by Ally Sentnor, whom the Current acquired from Utah in August for $600,000 in guaranteed intra-league funds.
After betting big on these players, it’s great news to see the gamble already paying off. Next up, the Current takes on the Chicago Stars on March 22.
Patrick Mahomes, The Chiefs, Hyped Up KC Current Before the Season Opener
One day before the start of the 2026 NWSL season, Mahomes reposted several photos showing Crown Center’s fountains flowing teal for the Current.
The Chiefs sent a message to the Current ahead of their home opener. The team’s official Instagram account posted, “KC BABY
Good luck this season, @kccurrent!”
The photo features Mahomes, Reid, and two-time reigning NWSL MVP Temwa Chawinga, who suffered a hip injury in October. Chawinga did not play in the season opener.
“With Temwa, we have to be really intelligent with how we bring her back, in the right doses into training,” Armas told reporters, per ESPN. “What I can tell you and everyone is that she’s getting closer. She’s not available yet, but she’s getting closer, which means we’re seeing her out on the training pitch these days.
“It’s such a demanding season for these athletes, especially the demands that she puts into games. So, as she’s getting close, we still are managing it the right way.”
